1802 has a very industrial yet swanky feel to it. With high ceilings showing beams and air conditioning vents, it mixes well with the wooden tables and brown leather chairs and sofas. The tables are nicely spaced apart so no conversations can be overheard and the roomy feel makes it a comfortable place to discuss business over lunch.

Cross over the bridge at East India Dock, go into the office complex, and you will find West End food at East End prices. Previously known as Perry's, this bar and brasserie has a small but stylish restaurant with crisp linen and a lovely walled courtyard for al fresco dining. The Anglo-Continental menu is limited but appetising, featuring dishes such as calves liver fried with onions and balsamic vinegar. Azzurro caters largely for the business market, so it's not open at weekends, but it's good value, smoker-friendly and well worth a detour if you're in the area on weekday.

The stonegrill menu is a unique concept in this part of London, Beluga Café being the only place in a six mile radius which offers it. Although it took about 25 minutes to reach our table, the meal came cooking on a heat retaining volcanic stone and within minutes the initially raw meat became extremely tender and succulent. The vegetables were also cooked on the stonegrill, which helped keep all the good nutrients and preserve the amazing taste.

In the shadow of St Mary-le-Bow Church is a stylish bar and bistro serving modern British cuisine. As part of the Motcombs Group, the standard is high and the philosophy simple: good food using local seasonable produce. Starters such as grilled goats cheese with bettroot tarter and apple salad or terrine of foie gras with diced consomme aspic and toasted brioche are featured in a compact but exquisite menu. Fish cake with lobster sauce is also a popular choice. Located in the heart of the City, prices are on the extravagant side and are claerly geared towards expense-account diners. However, if you're looking to push the boat out a little and it's warm outside, eat al fresco and enjoy excellent food in one of the most historic areas of London.
